Perhaps football (soccer) should be changed. When Americans talk football, we never get the two confused as the other is called soccer here. Call football whatever you like there.
Many words are different in various countries even though they speak roughly the same language.

ore in touch with the perception?
and what perception would that be?
that all sports must be called the same thing throughout the world? ha. not going to happen. sometimes you jut need to respect peoples decision to call things by a different name.
I myself don't get confused. It's only two words you have to memorize. Is that 2 too many?

"The Gridiron" is another word for the (American) Football field, but it's kind of an antiquated name. I do like the way other English speaking countries use the word as a name for the sport though. But since we've never named the game "Gridiron" , then why should we use the name that you've given it.
Yes, "football" is a vague term that describes any number of sports. In Australia, if you say "football" there's as many as four sports that you might be talking about (Aussie Rules, Soccer, the two codes of Rugby). But that's just the way it is.
I find it interesting that some English people get offended at our use of the word "soccer" (even though the word IS used occasionally there, as well). Americans certainly don't cry about the Dutch calling Baseball "Honkbal".
